Your Favorite Delta Divas Kick off the School Year!

Your Favorite Delta Divas Kick off the School Year!

By: Jasmine Robinson, Vice President and Treasurer of the Sigma Omicron Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.

As summer comes to a close, the Sigma Omicron chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. has returned to Salt Lake City to have another great year! Our Sorors have kept busy working, doing internships, and taking classes all summer. We had a Soror in Washington D.C. doing a public advocacy internship, one here in Salt Lake interning with a non-profit organization, and another here working with International Students at The U.

We also said goodbye to two of our amazing members, one who has graduated and is now attending graduate school in Illinois, and one who is bravely serving our country, as she was deployed as part of the U.S. air force this July. We miss our Sorors and wish them nothing but luck, happiness, and safety on their next part of their journeys.

Through all of this, Sigma Omicron has been prepping for another great year! We’ve hit the ground running in the first two weeks back at class. We tabled all during Welcome Week, at Plazafest, and at Crimson Nights at The U and participated in The U’s first ever Multicultural Greek Council Week. We had events every night last week, and got to meet some awesome people interested in learning more about Multicultural Greek life.

This week we had a MGC week. On Tuesday we had a Meet and Greet, getting the chance to mingle and talk about Delta, our values and history. On Wednesday we participated in a service project, helping knit hats for infants at Primary Children’s hospital and help create yarn out of recycled plastic bags. This plastic yarn gets crocheted into sleeping mats to be used by people experiencing homelessness. On Thursday we had a tailgate BBQ right before The U’s first football game against Weber State. We had a good time, and got to see our team win 41-10 against Weber, Go Utah! On Friday we finished with a fun social night in the Union, complete with pool tournaments, lots of food, and some karaoke fun!

Now, Delta is turning our attention to the coming year. We have some exciting events coming up, so be sure to check back at our website regularly for blog post updates as well as calendar updates. Here’s a sneak peek at some of the awesome events we hope you can attend (note: events are subject to time/location updates)!

Crimson and Pearls Brunch – Saturday, September 22 from 11am-2pm (Peterson Heritage Center, Room 1B)

National Voter Registration Day – Wednesday, September 26

Canned Food Drive (Homecoming Week) – October 15 – October 20

World AIDS Day – December 1

Financial Literacy Night – Tuesday, January 15

Multicultural Greek Council Yardshow – Friday, January 25 (University of Utah Union Ballroom)

American Heart Association Event – Friday, February 1

These are events that work toward our Five Point Programmatic Thrust: Educational Development, Economic Development, International Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and Political Awareness and Involvement. They also include events that allow the community to know our collegiate chapter is here in Salt Lake City, and give people a chance to come learn more about what we do and what we stand for.

Sigma Omicron is so excited for the 2018-2019 sorority and school year, and we can’t wait to get started!
